Confirm rent, deposit, and break-open fees on each bank’s published charge sheet before you pay.
Figures are illustrative; branch tariffs and agreements prevail.
Eligibility & fixed-deposit myth
Locker rules are contract-specific. Staff may push other products—what matters is the bank’s published locker tariff and your signed agreement.
MYTH “FD is mandatory for every locker”
Not a universal rule. If a locker is available, allocation should follow the bank’s official policy and charges—not informal deposit targets.
TYPICAL Savings + KYC + nominee + NPR charges
Most banks link lockers to an operating account, updated KYC, nominee registration, and payment of annual rent plus refundable security deposit.
If you are pressed for FD
- Ask for the Standard Charge Sheet and locker agreement clauses.
- Escalate through the bank’s service hierarchy if terms don’t match what you were told.
- Compare branches or other banks with vault service.
Availability tips
- Call ahead: ask for vacant small/medium lockers.
- Use each bank’s official branch locator on its website (filter for locker/safe deposit if offered).

Joint access & mandate
Operation mode (either/or, jointly, survivor clause) is defined in the locker agreement—not informal branch practice.
Joint hirers
- Both complete KYC and sign the agreement.
- Surrender / replacement keys usually needs all hirers per wording.
Mandate / authorized person
- File the bank’s mandate form with ID and photos.
- Authorized persons typically cannot surrender the locker or reassign hirers.
Lost key & break-open
Do this first
- Report to branch; submit written application.
- ID verification; temporary freeze of access.
- Schedule break-open with you present; new lock and keys issued.
Budget roughly रू 5,000–6,000 service fee plus lock cost—deducted from security deposit, which you may need to replenish.
Operations & rent discipline
Visits
- Many banks allow ~12 free visits per year; extra visits may cost रू 200–500.
- Access during banking hours unless special vault hours apply.
| Scenario | Typical course |
|---|---|
| Short rent delay | Reminders + penalty per tariff |
| Long default | Notice, forced opening, recovery per contract/law |
Contents: Banks do not normally insure what is inside; buy your own cover for valuables.
Opening checklist
Bring
- Citizenship / ID originals + copies
- Photos; nominee ID + photo
- NPR for rent + deposit (e.g. ~रू 15,000 for a small locker example)
FAQ
Death of hirer?
Nominee / legal heirs follow the bank’s succession process with death certificate and IDs. Joint agreements may pass by survivorship if written that way.
Bank opening locker without me?
Only where law and contract allow—court order, statutory non-payment process, or emergencies as defined.
Branch transfer?
Usually surrender and re-apply at the new branch.
Security & helplines
Verify numbers on each bank’s official site before dialing.
